  • As founder secretary of the Idukki SPCA conducted and implemented various projects and programmes related to animal welfare in various parts of the state.
  • Filed a number of cases in the Hon. High Court of Kerala and subordinate courts.
  • Stopped truckloads of heifers and bullocks in Ernakulam district destined for illegal slaughter and entrusted the Animals with AWARDS, the animal welfare wing of Swadeshi Science Movement.
  • Inspected and filed reports on the status of slaughter houses in the capacity of Commission Member constituted by the AWBI following directions from the Hon. Supreme Court of India.
  • Filed cases in the Hon. High Court of Kerala and stopped the illegal bullock cart races.
  • Stopped the slaughter of a pair of camels brought from Gujarat during Eid festival and transported them back to their native state.
  • As nominee in various institutional Animal Ethics Committees under the CPCSEA effectively curtail the indulgent number of animals for experimentation and enforcement of four R’s in experiment protocol.

Being Cognizant of A G Babu

A G Babu was born as the fifth of the seven children of Shri Gopalan Nair and Shrimathi Lakshmikutty. He completed his Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Kerala and Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations from the Institute of Journalism, Press Club Trivandrum.

Professional Background

  1. Done a series of investigative reports and news stories for various English and Malayalam periodicals and dailies on environment protection, drug addiction, human trafficking and animal rights
  2. Worked as district correspondent for ‘Kerala Kaumudi’ daily in Idukki district from 1984 to 1987.
  3. Worked and contributed for ‘Vanitha’.
  4. Done a series of articles for ‘Indian Express’
  5. Worked as state correspondent of ‘Sunday Mail’ during 1989-1992
  6. Worked as State Correspondent for ‘The Pioneer’ during 1994-’95.
  7. Done a series of documentaries and short films for P.T.I. [TV], Doordarshan, Asianet etc.
  8. Taught English Language & Literature and Journalism Courses in various colleges and universities.
  9. Trained a number of students for IELTS, CDS and NDA.
  10. Translated the book ‘Pakistan or the Partition of India’ authored by Dr. B R Ambedkar from English to Malayalam

Research and Social Activities

  1. Conducted a comprehensive research on the Ecological Impacts of Illegal cannabis cultivation in the Western Ghats for WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) during 1992-94

  2. Actively involved in the resistance movement to highlight the environmental issues related to Silent Valley and Pooyamkutty Hydroelectric projects.

  3. Conducted a number of walking tours and awareness campaigns in various places among the Western Ghats to spread messages on ecopreservation.

  4. Co-ordinated with the media and opinion leaders in the court cases related to the death of wild elephants, cruelty shown to elephants, smuggling and illegal trafficking cattle and the cases relating to the killing of stray dogs.

  5. Conducted a number of awareness camps, seminars and debates on animal issues especially on trafficking of animals for slaughter and for the imposition of court-verdict in the ABC (dogs) Rules.

  6. Interacted with the various district authorities, superintendents of police and animal husbandry officials in effectively controlling the illegal entry of animals for slaughter through various check posts 7. Done a series of investigative stories on the notorious ‘female infanticide ‘practices of Usilampatty and nearby villages of Tamil Nadu’

  7. Actively lobbied against unethical practices followed by different University and college level animal houses.

  8. Conducted and participated in a number of seminars on animal rights and related issues in and out of the State

Awards and Achievements

  1. Won the national award for reporting (“High Ranges Hooked to Ganja”- Indian Express) instituted by the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) along with Ms. Kiran Bedi IPS in 1991.

  2. The W.W.F, The UNDCP (United Nations Drug Control Programme) and the DEA of USA have enlisted in their libraries the study conducted on illegal ganja farming.

  3. Filed in the High Court of Kerala and various subordinate courts a number of P.I.L and such cases of public interest. The Kerala High Court watched the documentary on the cruelty shown to the bulls during the cattle race at Kakkoor and imposed strict restrictions for its conduct. The Hon. Court put a note of appreciation on the film.
  4. The District collector of Idukki ordered an enquiry into the conduct of the cattle race in connection with the tourism festival at Thekkady in Kerala.
  5. Campaigned successfully for the inclusion of animal ethics in the under-graduate curriculum in Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala.
  6. Rescued truckloads of weaned calves being trafficked for slaughter at Thripunithura, Kerala and on direction from the Magistrate court handed them over to an AWO for rehabilitation.
  7. Filed a case in the Hon. High Court of Kerala for the successful rescue of a pair of camels illegally brought to Ernakulum to be slaughtered during the Id festival.
  8. Member, Slaughter-house Inspection Commission, constituted underorders from the Hon. Supreme Court of India
